TESC Environmental Responsibility Program.TESC recognizes that being socially and environmentally responsible is, above all, a commitment to current and future generations. More than just the integration of business relations, it stimulates the quality of life and preservation of natural resources by creating awareness in the internal and external publics.

Company guidelines include contributing to the economic development of society, taking care that all resources are used in a sustainable manner for the collective benefit and building of ethical and long lasting relationships.

TESC is constantly investing in improving the work environment, whether in the training of personnel or participating in social and cultural projects that could be translated into benefits for the community.

Performing activities in a sustainable way is an essential premise for growth, prosperity and adding value to shareholder investments. Based on the Socio Environmental Responsibility concept, TESC seeks to enrich Brazil’s economic activity and act effectively in the sustainable development of the region in which it is located, preserving environmental conditions and promoting well being.

INTERNAL SOCIAL ACTIONS

Physiotherapists and Physical Education teachers conduct specific physical exercises for each company sector, focused on health, well being and sickness prevention.

The blood pressure of all employees is measured weekly to detect any possible alteration in the employee’s health.

The Fruit Day Program consists of delivering one type of fruit to all TESC, WRC and CARGOLINK employees, on the last Friday of every month. The Program was created to encourage healthy eating and, consequently, to change eating habits. The fruit is prepared by a group of TESC workers who, voluntarily, arrive one hour earlier on delivery day.

CULTURAL ACTIONS

The Porta do Sol Institute began activities in August 2008 in the city of São Francisco do Sul/SC.

The aim of the project is to teach music theory through instruments such as the guitar and violin. Using the Suzuki music teaching method, the Institute currently has a total of 40 underprivileged children between 8 and 10 years of age living in the Majorca suburb, in São Francisco do Sul.

All students receive their instruments and are taught from the beginning how to look after, transport and tune their guitars and violins.

Rehearsals are conducted by expert teachers three days a week, at times outside normal teaching hours. All those accepted for the classes must present an attendance record twice a term issued by the public school at which they study together with their report card showing their latest grades. Students with an attendance record of less than 80% at regular school and with average grades of less than 7 cannot participate in the classes. Furthermore, students must comply with all disciplinary rules of the location where classes take place.

Aimed at helping the intellectual, social and emotional development of the children, the Porta do Sol Institute further offers pedagogic support and recovery classes in all basic subjects at primary level, contributing to a well rounded education for the children.

Created in 2006 and linked to the Municipal Department of Education and Culture. Its objectives include promoting discussions on the importance of reading and to introduce activities that stimulate this habit among students and the community.

The Golden Ukulele Project began in June 2005 in the city of São Francisco do Sul/SC.

This project aims to teach “Choro” – popularly known as “chorinho”. Typically Brazilian, “choro” is considered number one in popular urban music. It is difficult to play, due to requiring a lot of study, technique and full command of the instrument.

There are currently 84 students ranging from 9 to 18 years of age, with a full scholarship. Each student receives an instrument, which can be taken home for study purposes.

The students rehearse with specialized teachers 3 times a week and give regular presentations at events and in companies around the region, spreading the culture of “choro” and showing their abilities as musicians.

All students enrolled in the project must present an attendance record twice a term issued by the public school where they study and a copy of their report card showing their latest grades. Students with an attendance record of less than 80% at regular school and with average grades of less than 7 cannot participate in the classes.

The Golden Ukulele Project teaches much more than music. Values such as education, good manners, discipline and respect for your neighbor are practiced daily. In addition to teaching cords, rhythm and melodies, the project helps to prepare young people for life.

SPORTS ACTIONS

The NADAR Project was begun on 18 October 2006 in the city of São Francisco do Sul/SC.

The aim of the project is to offer basic ideas in aquatic exercises and the four fundamental swimming styles to underprivileged children attending municipal and state schools in São Francisco do Sul.

Currently, this project involves 120 participants, including children and adolescents between 8 and 16 years of age.

The classes are conducted by specialized teachers twice a week, outside normal teaching hours and only require the interest and attendance of the project participants.

All students participating in NADAR receive a kit containing a swim suit, T-shit, bathing cap and goggles, as a way of encouraging them by providing the proper conditions for practicing the sport.

The NADAR Project provides much more than just swimming lessons. It opens the way for children and adolescents in the municipality to develop their potential and, who knows, in the future they may represent São Francisco do Sul or even Brazil in pools around the world.

COMMUNITY ACTIONS

The New World Therapeutic Community began its activities in May 2003 in the city of São Francisco do Sul/SC.

The aim of the project is to help people suffering from drug abuse in their mental, moral, behavioral and spiritual recovery process and their eventual social, family, professional and cultural rehabilitation.

An 8 member team of colleagues is currently caring for a group of 14 admitted drug dependents aged between 16 and 62.

The first stage of the treatment offered by COTENOM consists of detoxification and once this stage has been overcome the rehabilitation process begins with the person being shown how to follow a routine and live a healthy life.

Maximum admittance time for a patient to undergo all treatment stages is 9 months; however there are those who stay on in the community, but now in the role of colleague and volunteer in the difficult work of drug recovery and rehabilitation.

COTENOM also takes care of HIV positive patients and two of its workers were recently qualified in this field in order to offer more specialized treatment.

As you can see, the New World Therapeutic Community not only aims to free those suffering from addiction but also to give these people a new opportunity to rebuild their lives with dignity.

The Association of Parents and Friends of the Mentally Handicapped – APAE, began its activities in São Francisco do Sul on 6 November 1979.

With the objective of promoting education and training for the work, APAE seeks inclusion in society for those people who are mentally handicapped.

The institution, currently with 84 students ranging from 0 to 51 years of age, has a pedagogic team consisting of 13 teachers, a coordinator and a pedagogic director, as well as a technical team consisting of a physiotherapist, speech therapist and psychologist.

APAE São Francisco do Sul is developing six projects and offers painting, handcraft, cooking, physical education, computer and life quality classes, among many others of vital importance for the full development of their students.

Furthermore, the association offers a specialized educational service for students with a moderate mental handicap and who can also attend a regular school, thus serving to help both the special student as well as the respective teachers at the municipal or state school.

APAE São Francisco do Sul, as you can see, offers not only special education to special people but also comfort, affection and attention to those who equally deserve their place in society.

ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIONS

MAISS is an internal program focused on training in environmental, people management, health, work safety and social responsibility areas.

The aim of the program is to transmit theoretical knowledge and to develop practical activities related to the environment, health and safety. In addition to this, the program aims to encourage mixing among the employees from: TESC, WRC and CARGOLINK.

For the purpose of meeting the needs and expectation of all employees, three commissions were formed with “facilitators” representing all TESC, WRC and CARGOLINK sectors. Further to these commissions, there are three “mediators”, who follow and help in the development of organizing the event. Effective participation of those forming the commissions guarantees the success of the event.

Those who pass the inspection also get a chocolate.

This involves accompanying the cetacean (dolphins) and chelonian (turtles) species around the TESC pier. Through this program, an observer follows the habits of these animals as well as the number of adults and offspring, estimated distance from the pier, etc.

This initiative involves the gradual replacement of the water management equipment at TESC’s facilities. Taps and flushes, among others will be replaced by more modern equipment, thus foreseeing a reduction of 60% in water consumption.

TESC has been planting and donating around 1000 seedlings, including fruit trees, greens, vegetables and herbs. These seedlings have been distributed to municipal schools, rest homes, institutions taking care of children and adolescents, as well as any other interested parties.
